Which bars get the sun on summer evenings?

Of the places with a drinks list, these terraces get the most sun between 5 and 9pm in June, July and August, on a clear day. The figure is the share of that time the sun reaches the pavement or terrace out front.

Across the guide, 55 venues are sun traps, in the sun at least three quarters of the time between noon and 9pm, April to September. See who's in the sun at 7pm in July.

Where's sunny at lunchtime in winter?

In winter the sun stays low, so tall buildings shade most streets. These terraces, at places with a drinks list, still catch it around lunchtime (noon to 2pm, November to February) on a clear day:

Which bars have a happy hour or two-for-one?

23 venues advertise a cocktail deal on their own site, including Annabel's Cabaret & Discotheque, Armado Lounge, Bar Rakuda, Bistrot Pierre Plymouth, Bonne Santé restaurant & cocktail bar and Cosy Club Plymouth. Offers change often and some only run on certain days, so check before you go.

Where can I drink outside?

51 venues are marked as having outdoor seating, a terrace or a garden on OpenStreetMap. Every venue page shows how much sun reaches its frontage through the year, and the bars and terraces list can show only venues with outdoor seating.

Can I find a particular cocktail in the sun at a particular time?

Yes. On the front page, pick a drink, a date and a time, and it lists the places that serve it with their terrace in the sun then. For example, a Mojito at 3pm on 12 July. The sun figures are worked out month by month, so any day in July gives July's answer.

Are the prices up to date?

They were checked on 21 October 2026, from each venue's own website, PDF menu or ordering page, and the guide is refreshed monthly. Menus change and a price online isn't always the price at the bar, so treat them as a guide. Drinks older than six months are dropped. 61 venues publish no current prices online; they're listed separately.

How do you know which terraces get the sun?

From the Environment Agency's laser survey of every building, tree and hill in the city, at one-metre detail. For each venue we trace the skyline from the pavement or terrace out front and follow the sun every ten minutes through a whole year. It can't see clouds, awnings or parasols, and buildings put up since the survey are missing. More about the method.

I run a bar. How do I correct something?

Email contact@plymouthresearch.uk with the venue's name and what's wrong: a price, a missing drink, a deal, or if you'd rather not be listed. We fix it at the next update.
